A studio of the Painted family

The sea keeps time.

Painted Heavens prints the night sky over one moment. Painted Shores prints the water under one year: every high and low tide at the shore you name, from the first of January to the last of December, drawn as the station itself would predict it.

A tide table is one of the most beautiful objects in science and it is almost always printed badly, as a grey grid in a bait shop. We think the year of a harbour deserves the wall. So we take the harmonic constants NOAA publishes for each of its 61 stations we draw, sum them for every quarter hour of the year, and set the result in Cinzel on paper, on the flag of the state the water belongs to, or on the coast itself.

A prediction, never a forecast. The chart knows the Moon and the Sun; it does not know the wind, the barometer or the river. Those are weather, and the plate says so in its own footer. If your shore has no NOAA station, we say so rather than draw the nearest gauge and call it yours.

The engine behind every plate is the one that runs Semidiurnal, our free tide clock, vendored into this shop at a named commit so the preview you approve and the file we print cannot differ. The arithmetic is on its own page.
